Celebrities are just like regular people — they have hobbies, interests and some of them have very strong religious beliefs. Here are 25 unexpected celebrities who you didn’t know were extremely religious.
Denzel Washington – Who would’ve thought that the actor famous for his roles in movies like Training Day and American Gangster is actually very religious… Back in 2012, he told GQ that he is a devout Christian and that he “reads the Bible every day.”
Ashton Kutcher – Ashton rarely speaks about religion, which is why most people don’t take him for a very religious person, but he’s apparently a devout student of Kabbalah. He believes that Israel is “the source of creation,” and visited a number of Kabbalah centers in Tel Aviv during his recent trip to the capital of Israel.
Mel Gibson – Some of you may not know, but Gibson is a very conservative Catholic, which is one of the reasons that he felt the need to make The Passion of the Christ. Although reviews of this movie have been pretty good, he was criticized quite a bit for his portrayal of Jews. “There is no salvation for those outside the Church,” Mel once said during an interview.
Mayim Bialik – Not only is Mayim a neuroscientist on the TV show Big Bang Theory, but she also holds a PhD in this field in real life as well. This is why it may come as a surprise that she’s actually very religious. Apparently, she studies Jewish texts and even shuts down her social media accounts during the Sabbath.
Chris Tucker – Chris became a Christian in 1997, after his movie Money Talks was released. He claims that he refused many big film roles since then, because characters he was supposed to play were not in line with his Christian values. After he was arrested for speeding in 2005, he apologized to the officer and said that he was running late to church. Yes, he’s that serious about his religion!
Debby Ryan – The famous Disney Channel darling is not only very religious, but she even started a bible study group for her fellow kid actors.
Angus T. Jones – Chances are you’ve watched at least a couple of Two and a Half Men episodes. Angus played young Jake on the show, and we have seen him grow up in front of our very eyes. Many fans were surprised when he called the show “filth” and decided not to star in it anymore because it conflicts his religious views. This happened after he joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Lupe Fiasco – There aren’t many rappers who don’t drink or do drugs, but Lupe Fiasco is one of them and that’s mainly due to his religion. Fiasco was raised Muslim and has recently said that he believes Islam will one day take over the world.
Julia Roberts – Most people have no idea that Julia was raised Catholic, but has converted to Hinduism during adulthood. What may be even more surprising is the fact that she often finds time to visit a Hindu temple with her family where they chant and pray, despite her busy schedule. “I’m definitely a practicing Hindu,” Julia said in an interview with People in 2011.
Richard Gere – His hardcore fans probably know that Richard is really serious about practicing Tibetan Buddhism. In fact, he visited Tibet on a few occasions and he continues to show support for Dalai Lama, which is why the Chinese government banned him from visiting their country.
David Archuleta – Religion plays a huge role in the life of this American Idol winner. Despite the fact that he had a really promising music career ahead of him, David decided to stop his work for a while and become a Mormon missionary. Back in 2014, Archuleta got back from his two-year mission in South America, but he has yet to release a new album.
Stephen Colbert – The popular talk show host is a very religious man. Not only is he a practicing Catholic, but he says that religions strongly influences his life. Stephen also teaches Sunday School.
Mark Wahlberg – Although Mark was raised Catholic, this didn’t stop him from having many run-ins with the law when he was younger. Mark believes that it was the Catholic Church that saved him from a life of crime. Nowadays, he attends church almost daily.
Natalie Portman – As you may know, Natalie was born in Israel. After her family decided to move to the United States, she started attending Jewish day school. She went on to graduate from Harvard, where she took courses at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She is very religious and wants to raise her children in the Jewish faith. Even her husband is in the process of converting to Judaism.
Tim Tebow – American professional baseball outfielder is known for his outspoken Christian faith. He shared his faith in many prisons, schools, churches and conferences across the country and has talked about his choice to remain a virgin until he gets married.
Nick Jonas – Similarly to Tim, the famous member of the Jonas Brothers singing group wore a purity ring until 2014. “I’ve had an incredibly intense journey with faith and religion and my growth. My belief in God is still very strong and important to me as a person, and I think that’s all that should matter. The other things around it are not as important to me as my relationship with God,” Nick said in an interview with Huffington Post.
Serena Williams – Serena was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness and is very religious. She even credited God after her 2012 Wimbledon win. “I want to thank Jehovah for letting me get this far. I almost didn’t make it a few years ago, but now I’m here again and it’s so worth it,” she said.
Patricia Heaton – The Everybody Loves Raymond actress was raised Catholic, and is still very religious. She once mentioned that she hates the fact that Hollywood tends to negatively portray religious people. Apparently, one of the reasons Patricia is so big on faith is that she is “scared of being rejected at the pearly gates.”
Russell Brand – The famous English actor converted to Hinduism a couple of years ago. He said on numerous occasions that this religions saved him from his drug addiction.
Faith Hill – The country singer was raised in a very devout Baptist family. “That’s where my strength comes from. It’s my foundation. I was raised in a Christian home and it prepared me to deal with life on my own,” she said in one of her interviews.
MC Hammer – Years after he released his popular song U Can’t Touch This, MC Hammer became a reverend. He claims that MC in his name now stands for “Man of Christ,” and the ex-musician now devotes a lot of his time to prison and youth ministries.
Marie Osmond – In case you didn’t know, the singer/actress was raised as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “I have great faith in God. Without faith, I don’t know how I would have been able to get through what I’ve been through,” she once said of her relationship with good.
Gary Busey – The famous actor revealed that he is Christian in 1996. “I am proud to tell Hollywood I am a Christian. For the first time I am now free to be myself,” Busey said. We’re not sure why you were hiding your faith Gary, it’s nothing to be ashamed of.
Alice Cooper – Believe it or not, Cooper is a born again Christian. After his crazy rock-n-roll days, he decided to return to the church. “I went out and the Lord led me through everything, maybe allowed it but then started reeling me back in, saying OK, you’ve seen enough, now let’s bring you back to where you belong,” the singer said of his journey.
