A Soviet spy laughs at his executioner in a picture taken in Rukajärvi, in East Karelia, in November 1942. He was shot moments later. These photographs were only released to the public in 2006.

This photograph, taken in 1941, depicts a German soldier sharing rations with a Russian woman and her child. Poignantly, this photograph was taken during the Nazi’s ‘Hunger Plan’, which starved to death millions of the Soviet population.
