You may not have known this, but unsimulated sex in the film industry was banned by the US law until the 1960s. To this day, most sex scenes in Hollywood films are simulated, but sometimes actors actually have real sex on-screen, whether because the director thinks it’s necessary or because they want to. Let’s check out some of the movies that featured unsimulated sex…
Monster’s Ball (2001) – Who wouldn’t jump in on the opportunity to get hot and steamy with a beautiful woman like Halle Berry? Rumors have it that Billy Bob Thornton definitely didn’t skip his chance. Billy and Berry supposedly had real sex on the set of their 2001 film Monster’s Ball.
The Brown Bunny (2003) – Most people were surprised to find out that this flick featured a real sex act by Chloë Sevigny, who’s character performed oral sex on co-star Vincent Gallo. In an interview with Playboy, the actress mentioned that she experienced “a lot of emotions” when filming the scene. “I’ll probably have to go to therapy at some point,” she also said.
Antichrist (2009) – The Lars von Trier film features a couple of scenes with some pretty graphic content. For those who were wondering — yes, the sex scenes were real, but stars Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg actually used body doubles in them.
Sweet Sweetback’s Badasssss Song (1971) – Many years after the film was released, Melvin Van Peebles, its director and star, said that he actually had sex while filming the movie. Not only that, but he also contracted gonorrhea during filming. Ouch! Want to hear something ever more disturbing? Van Peebles’ son is also in the movie and actually stars in the film’s opening scene, during which he also has sex. Mario Van Peebles was only 13 years old at the time!
Cruising (1980) – Cruising is without a doubt one of the most controversial movies Pacino has ever starred in. A lot of people also called the film homophobic, because it tells a story of a serial killer who targets gay men. Cruising featured quite a few murder scenes that were cut with actual footage of men having sex, which caused quite an uproar back then.
All About Anna (2005) – This Danish film revolves around intimate relationships, which means there had to be a lot of erotic scenes. What some people who watched this movie probably don’t know is that all intercourse and masturbation scenes were totally unsimulated. Some critics were outraged by this, but director Jessica Nilsson defended the movie by claiming that “without the sex scenes, the film’s drama would fall apart.”
Love (2015) – When you’re watching Gaspar Noé’s 2015 film, pretty much nothing is left to the imagination. Not only are there a lot of long, unsimulated sex scenes, but the movie is also available in 3D. The director faced a lot of criticism for his approach, and some people were mad that the film shows sex scenes every chance it gets.
Pink Flamingos (1972) – This 1972 film broke many boundaries, but there’s one scene in particular that is especially disturbing. In the movie, drag queen Divine gives oral sex to her son. Of course, the actor wasn’t actually related to the actress, but the scene was totally real and unsimulated.
Romance (1999) – Romance is a very graphic film that features many acts of completely unsimulated sex. The movie revolves around Marie, who lives with her boyfriend Paul. Since he refuses to be intimate with her, Marie searches for other sex partners all over the city.
In The Realm Of The Senses (1976) – This is without the doubt one of the most controversial movies of all time. It contains numerous real sex scenes, as well as many gruesome scenes, which are definitely not real. Slate magazine said this movie can’t be compared to others, and called it “a magical fusion of art and pornography that somehow renders debates about the distinction between those two categories boringly beside the point. Asking if this film is porn is like asking if prehistoric cave paintings showing men with erections are porn. They’re porn, they’re art, they’re elemental and beautiful; it doesn’t matter.”
Lie With Me (2005) – After the public commented that the sex scenes between Eric Balfour and Lauren Lee Smith in this 2005 film looked totally real, it was revealed that they in fact were. Lauren made a comment about the film – “It’s controversial, but it’s also something everyone will understand. It’s about a woman who is not so comfortable with the emotional side of relationships, but is so good with the physical… side. Taking the role wasn’t about the ‘naked chick’ quality – it’s about showing strong… women.”
Caligula (1979) – Since this movie is based on the life of one of the craziest Roman emperors who was obsessed with orgies, it doesn’t come as a surprise that it features a lot of group sex scenes. IMDB’s Parental Guide explained it best – “No child should ever watch it, and several adults will have trouble with it. The film’s sexual content is considered pornographic in nature, with several hardcore inserts intended to sexually arouse, but really turn out to be quite disturbing.”
Intimacy (2001) – This film revolves around two strangers who engage in anonymous sex every week and end up developing feelings for each other. There are many sex scenes between the movie’s stars, Kerry Fox and Mark Rylance, and all of them were unsimulated. A couple of years after the film was released, Fox was asked whether she regrets doing the sex scenes, but she said that she was proud of them and claims this is one of her finest films.
Baise-Moi (2000) – This French movie’s title translates to F*ck Me or Rape Me, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that it features quite a bit of graphic scenes, including violent, unsimulated sex.
Wetlands (2013) – Wetlands was named the “most wtf, nsfw movie at 2013 Sundance film festival.” What most critics and movie review websites don’t mention is that this flick features a completely real scene of several men masturbating onto a pizza. Definitely not a great film for the faint of heart!
Nymphomaniac (2013) – Shia LaBeouf is definitely not a stranger when it comes to baring it all for the cameras, however, he took it a step further with his role in Nymphomaniacs. It is believed that he and his co-star Stacey Martin had real intercourse in the 2013 film that was directed by Lars Von Trier.
O Fantasma (2000) – O Fantasma is a Portuguese gay-themed film that revolves around Sérgio, a garbage collector who becomes totally obsessed with another guy. As you’ve probably guessed it, the film features quite a bit of unsimulated sex scenes.
9 Songs (2004) – This movie, which stars Kieran O’Brien and Margo Stilley features enough sexual material to make an adult star blush. Apparently, O’Briend and Stilley committed to unsimulated sexual encounters when signing their contracts. It seems that they weren’t that sexually compatible, because this movie appeared on quite a few lists of the worst sex-scenes ever in a movie ever.
Performance (1970) – Although it hasn’t been confirmed by either Mick Jagger or his Performance co-star Anita Pallenberg, it is said that the two had real sex during the filming of their sex scene. To make things even weirder — at the time, Anita was dating Jagger’s bandmate, Keith Richards. Crazy times!
Bolero (1984) – This movie is all about Bo Derek’s character’s getting older and realizing her full sexual potential, so of course it makes sense there had to be some unsimulated sex scenes in the film.
Don’t Look Now (1973) – It seems that Donald Sutherland was a wild one earlier in his career. Apparently, Donald and his co-star Julie Christie cheated a bit during the filming of their sex scenes. Rumors have it that they weren’t actually acting!
Factory Girl (2006) – Sienna Miller is truly a gorgeous woman, and basically any man would jump at the opportunity to get in bed with her, including her co-star Hayden Christensen. Rumors have it that these two were actually having sex during their erotic scene. This, however, didn’t stop the audience and critics from bashing this movie.
Wild Orchid (1989) – This movie revolves around two yuppies who want to get in each other’s pants and guess what? They do! But it’s not only this film’s characters who had sex. Apparently, Mickey Rourke and his female co-star Carre Otis didn’t do much acting while filming their wild sex scenes.
Shortbus (2006) – This film revolves around a group of people in New York who meet at an underground club to explore their sexual fantasies. It doesn’t come as a surprise that this movie features plenty of real sex scenes.
The Summer of Sam (1999) – Can you believe that actress Mira Sorvino really had sex with John Leguizamo during the filming of The Summer of Sam? Rumors have it that they weren’t acting at all in their sex scenes, although none of them have confirmed it.
Basic Instinct (1992) – Sharon Stone may seem like a classy lady, but if rumors are true, she and her co-star Michael Douglas had real-life sex while filming Basic Instinct. The scenes are so realistic that many people believe that no acting was involved in these scenes.
The Idiots (1998) – Director Lars von Trier is a very popular name on this list. Apparently, he loves realism and unsimulated lovemaking in his movies. This is exactly why we’ve included four of his films already. This particular movie features a lot of orgies and many of the scenes consist of real fornication acts.
Pola X (1999) – This film is based on a Herman Melville novel and stars Guillaume Depardieu and Yekaterina Golubeva. Just like in the Antichrist, the intimate scenes are totally real, but the stars’ bodies were replaced by body doubles.
Otto; Or Up with Dead People (2008) – If you want to watch one of the craziest and weirdest zombie flicks out there, then this is the one. As you’ve probably guessed it, the film, which was directed by Bruce LaBruce, also features unsimulated sex scenes. We’ll stick with The Walking Dead…
Scarlet Diva (2002) – This semi-autobiographical movies focuses on the life of Italian actress and director Asia Argento. Since sex and drugs played a huge part in her life, it only makes sense that a big portion of the film revolves around them. Sex scenes in this movie are totally real, but we truly hope that the drugs weren’t.
Gandu (2010) – This Bengali film directed by Quashiq Mukherjee is the only Indian movie on this list. It caused quite an uproar in its home country, particularly for its use of foul language and many steamy sex scenes. It was reported that quite a few viewers left the theater in the middle of the film.
Gift (1966) – This Danish movie from the 1960s featured a couple of unsumulated sex scenes, which was a huge deal back in the day and it was the reason some of the scenes had to be censored before it was allowed to be shown in the United States.
Blue Movie (1969) – This was one of the first movies in the United States to feature explicit (and unsimulated) scenes. It was directed by artist Andy Warhol, who later mentioned that his film was a huge influence on Last Tango in Paris, which starred legendary Marlon Brando.
El Topo (1970) – In order to make sure that the intimate scenes felt as humanly as possible, director Alejandro Jodorowsky insisted that scenes should be unsimulated. In order to make sure the actors were comfortable enough, only a photographer and a technician were present on the set during these scenes.
Cry Uncle! (1971) – This movie revolves around a private detective who’s working on a case that includes a murder, blackmail and a couple of adult situations. Although it never shows an actual penetration, the film does feature a lot of other unsimulated acts.
A Scream in the Streets (1973) – Just like other movies on this list, A Scream in the Streets features a couple of unsimulated sex acts, the only difference is -they last only a few seconds in this 1973 film.
Immoral Tales (1974) – If you have a weak stomach, we suggest avoiding this 1974 movie. Not only is there a pretty risque scene featuring actress Maria Forsa, but there’s another very disturbing scene between a woman and her pet. Definitely not for the faint of heart!
Caged (2011) – Caged is one of the newest films on our list. A couple of characters in this movie take it all the way on the big screen.
Lust Caution (2007) – Although it hasn’t been confirmed by anybody who’s worked on the set, there were many rumors that this WWII-themed movie featured real sex scenes between Tony Leung Chiu Wai and his co-star Tang Wei.
Fruits of Passion (1981) – While some scenes in this 1981 movie directed by Shoji Terayama weren’t real, there’s a scene that features a completely unsimulated fellatio. The film revolves around the character name O, who is placed in a Chinese brothel for a “training.” While there, she is subjected to many humiliating experiences.
